Employment Special Interest Group

Dementia affects a person’s ability to function at their full capacity, but this does not mean that they can no longer remain in employment. This Employment Special Interest Group seeks to raise awareness and support employment for persons with mild dementia to maintain their independence.

“When a person diagnosed with dementia is asked to stop working, they do not just lose an income. They have lost a big chunk of their identity which they have developed over the years, as well as their daily purpose for life.”

“Gaining employment provides us the independence and ability to sustain our daily needs; be it for ourselves or to support our family and not depend on handouts. Having dementia does not mean we are no longer able to work. Work gives us the opportunity to interact with colleagues, makes us feel independent and helps us feel useful.”
