On 15 February 2023, Dementia Singapore held its first-ever Chari-Tee Golf event at Sentosa Golf Club, raising a total of $260,000. The day saw over 140 golfers take part in an exciting game, followed by a special dinner graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, who emphasised that it indeed takes a whole-of-community effort to create a dementia-inclusive society.
The day kicked off with a hearty lunch buffet, after which our golfers made their way to Serapong Golf Course to start the game. The sunny afternoon was perfect for some friendly competition coupled with playful banter amongst friends, old and new.
Amidst all the excitement, the cause they had gathered for remained at the forefront of everyone’s minds, which was iterated by local DJ Glenn Ong, who was also there to lend his support as a player: “I think it is a wonderful, meaningful event here today because we’re all working towards a dementia-inclusive society.”
A Special Dinner
Having worked up an appetite after a round of golf, everyone was more than happy to hang up their clubs and caps and tuck into a delicious meal. Dinner, which was graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, saw more than 160 attendees, including Dementia Singapore Board and Committee members and our CEO Jason Foo.
Following an opening address by Sherwan Sharip, our Director of Fundraising & Volunteer Management, CEO Jason Foo delivered a welcome address where he highlighted the importance of continued support from donors and partners. This would allow Dementia Singapore to initiate new and innovative programmes and services that benefit persons living with dementia and their families.
Minister Shanmugam then took to the stage to speak about the local dementia landscape, and how with the help of community partners, various Dementia-Friendly Communities (DFCs), including Yishun – where his own Chong Pang constituency is based – has in place several initiatives that cater to the needs of those impacted by the condition.
He further emphasised: “For Singapore to become a truly dementia-inclusive home, we will need to have active community involvement, a lot more ground-up initiatives, and neighbourhood networks – really a whole-of-society effort underpinned by a spirit of care.”
Concluding his speech, he commended Dementia Singapore’s efforts over the years to serve the dementia community and urged everyone to continue to support the dementia cause.
As the night drew on, guests feasted on delectable dishes and were delighted in singing performances. Prizes were also awarded to skilled golfers for their outstanding play during the day, as well as lucky draw winners.
Dementia Singapore would like to express our heartiest thanks to all our distinguished guests – including our Guest-of-Honour Minister K Shanmugam, Platinum Sponsors Advisors Alliance Group and Gold Lite, and our Hole-in-One sponsor, Cycle and Carriage. We also would like to show our gratitude to all those who purchased golf flights, in-kind sponsors, and cash donors. It is with your generous support that our first-ever charity golf event turned out to be a tee-rrific success!
