The first community-based dementia prevention programme (DPP) in Singapore targeting at-risk elderly persons has reflected favourable results, with social connectedness and satisfaction of life the areas which has seen the most improvement.
First launched in Queenstown and Eunos in 2016, there has also been a decline in anxiety and depressive symptoms within three months. In the DPP, participants are involved with dementia-friendly activities like “meridian flapping” exercise, mindfulness awareness practice, horticulture, music reminiscence, and health education.
With dementia expected to continue being an issue in the coming years, a new DPP has been launched in Tampines Changkat to cater to the needs of up to 50 seniors.
