One of the most widely-consumed beverages in the world might just play a part in keeping dementia away.

According to recent research conducted by Assistant Professor Feng Lei from the Department of Psychological Medicine at National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, drinking tea on a consistent basis can lower the risk of cognitive impairment by 50%, while the reduction can be as much as 86% for those who are genetically predisposed to developing Alzheimer’s.

The study was based on 957 Chinese seniors aged 55 years and above, and revealed that this long-term benefit of tea consumption stems from its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may protect the brain from damage and degeneration.

The even greater news is that these compounds are found in all types of tea, meaning that you can enjoy your favourite tea that may reduce your risk of developing cognitive disorders later in life. Simply make sure that it is brewed from real tea leaves.
