New studies have shown that eating fish once or twice a day may prolong mental function and help combat Alzheimer’s disease. Dietary changes, along with regular exercise, have been known to keep our brains in shape, and new research points to a correlation between omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish and blood flow to parts of the brain responsible for learning, memory and dementia.

Scans conducted on 166 participants tested 128 regions of the brain, with results showing a “statistically significant” link between higher blood flow and higher levels of the fatty acid. “This study opens the door to the possibility that relatively simple dietary changes could favourably impact cognitive function,” said Professor William Harris, co-author of the study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Before you fish-lovers rejoice, however, just bear in mind that these are just studies and not proven fact. We’re not endorsing any particular diet!
